Holmbush wood loop 6 miles


Part of this route can only be walked in dry weather, so ideal now.

As always we start at Golberdon crossroads, laminated copies of this and other walks are available at the parish hall porch. This walk is a nearly 6 mile walk.

Take the road opposite the war memorial sign posted to South Hill.

Continue pass Keadeen B&B, down to the bridge at Coombe and Phil Cole the butcher and Coombe Small Animal Hotel.

Up the slope pass Trewassick around the bend and look for the double metal gates on your right hand side. The footpath sign is missing. The gate opens easily and please carefully close it behind you. There was young cattle here yesterday and an electric fence which is easy to duck under, I advice you not to touch it. Plus if you run the cattle will run, if you stop they will stop.

Keep the hedge on your left all the way to the gate in the bottom corner. Again an easy gate to open,  close putting the rope over the post.

On the road turn RIGHT, past Tregate and the bridge. Can you spot the marker stone, on your left? Pass Higher Ford and the wide sweeping verge (the road was widen here some years ago)

At MANATON  take the narrow track to the right of the entrance. This brings you onto the Jericho Rd, straight ahead you’ll pass The Chutney Shed. Just before Jericho there is a field planted with Lavender, and just after the narrow point where the pot holes always are, there is a marker stone on your right.

And onto Camelot Kennels and the dangerous main road, taking care, cross over.

A short way on your right you’ll see a gate into the woods at Holmbush. Take the track and if you have time, explore some of the paths, otherwise, at the junctions take a left, right, left, right, left, until eventually you’ll come to the old mine buildings.

Take the path through the buildings and around to the right following a steepish path dropping down into the road. This is Stoke Rd at Kelly Bray, go RIGHT and pick up the pavement , look for painted stones here.

At the Swingle Tree pub, cut through the car park and cross the main road again and keep RIGHT.

Pass Appleby Lodge and at the next track off to your LEFT take the sign posted Bridlepath. Following the track you’ll come to a metal gate, it’s off it’s hinges, so take care opening and closing. On your right, you’ll see a lovely dated granite marker stone.

Keep following this stoney track, taking in the views of Callington on your left. Eventually you’ll come to a track that joins from the left from Maders, that’s another walk, today stay straight on. Just before the  track narrows, there are 2 gateways opposite eachother, on your right is another marker stone.

Continuing, the track become grassy and muddy, fine in dry weather but unadvisable on foot when wet, At the end of the track turn LEFT and soon you’ll see The Chutney Shed again. Keep to the road.

At the junction turn RIGHT then immediately LEFT this junction is known as Beech tree locally. The road is narrow for a short distance , then widens out. From here to Golberdon this area was GOLBER DOWN all open common land, until divided and enclosed in the 1800’s.

Follow the road straight back to the crossroads where you started.

We’re very fortunate to be able to enjoy walks from our doorsteps and have many footpaths, BUT do think about where these take you, some do pass close to homes so maybe best to rethink your routes, plus there is stock in the fields, please think, be responsible (think you are if you’re reading this) and STAY SAFE.

Parish Council Report


New Councillor – It gives me great pleasure to welcome Carol Samuel as our new Councillor, coopted at our January 2020 meeting. There was a very good response to the vacancy advert, and I take this opportunity to thank those who expressed and interest in the position.
Recreation Field /Play Area – The Council are looking at options to create a natural habitat wildflower area at the top of the recreation field, so if you have any ideas please let us know.
The fencing around the children’s play area is going to be replaced and the Council are looking at options and costs to get the work completed as soon as possible. As part of this work the fence line will be moved slightly to increase the size of the play area in the bottom corner of the site.
Weekly inspections are carried out on the play equipment and any repairs identified are dealt with as a matter of urgency.
The grass cutting contracts are now available to any contractor interested in tendering for the work. The closing date is the 14th February 2020. Please get in touch if you would be interested in submitting a price. Contractors will be required to provide insurance and the appropriate certificates to carry out the work required. The contractor will be appointed at the February 2020 meeting and the decision will be based on costs, work standards and “best value”.
The field is available to hire for private functions and can also be used in conjunction with the hire of the hall. Hire requests are approved at the discretion of the Council, so if you would like to hold an outside event and need some space, please get in touch.
Climate Change – At the start of our November 2019 meeting, the Chairman Cllr David Skelton gave a short presentation on climate change and how we can all do our bit to help stop a world-wide climate emergency. Several members of the public attended and shared ideas on what measures could work in South Hill. Those present were challenged to make the top 10 pledges, see here and also to find out their own carbon footprint using one of the easy to use carbon calculators such as https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/ or https://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx
Traffic speed – The Council recognise that much of the traffic travelling through Golberdon is exceeding the speed limit, especially during early mornings and later in the day. Often in these circumstances local residents can be to blame as drivers become complacent with the road layout. Cornwall Council have been notified of our concerns and we are working with them via the Community Network and the Police to address this matter. We are also in discussion with local Community Speed Watch teams who will be visiting the village to carry out random speed checks. Please be aware of your speed. We do lack the safety of pedestrian footways and need to protect our residents, the children walking to the school buses, and those who visit.

Bus Stop Sign – Cormac have agreed to place a bus stop sign on the post opposite the existing shelter in Golberdon. This was requested so that the designated stop could be clearly identified.

Potholes and Blocked Drains – If you come across a pothole. Blocked drain on any other highway issues the best way to report this is directly to Cornwall Council. The easiest way is to use a smart phone or computer and follow the link. You will soon see if it has already been reported and you will get updated when the problem has been inspected and the work done. You can also phone 0300 1234 222.

Footpaths – As the days get longer and the weather improves the Council will be looking to carry out some maintenance work on the parish footpaths. The Council can now accept the help of volunteers to trim the public rights of way and complete minor maintenance work. For anyone who is interested please get in touch with Cllr Andrew Budd. You do not have to commit and volunteers will be supervised, and work in groups. Thank you to those people who have already put their name forward.

Meetings – The Parish Council meet on the third Tuesday of each month in the Parish Hall at Golberdon. Meetings start at 7.30pm and last approximately two hours. At the start of every meeting there is a public session where members of the public can address the Council on any subject relating to the parish. Otherwise if you would like to just sit and listen, you are welcome – it’s surprising what we do.

Frogwell Loop walk August 18th 11am


Ali will be leading the CALSTOCK FOOTPATH SOCIETY Monthly walk on August 18th Here’s a rough outline offering a 3.5 to 4 mile and a 6.5 miles route.

Both routes start at The Doctors surgery on Haye Rd at 11am and take the lane to Frogwell, where we pick up the Footpath to Pencrebar Farm and the track down to Callington Newbridge. We follow the river and cross fields looping back around to Caddapitt and take the footpath through the woods for a lunch stop before heading onto to Haye Mill where you can see the working water wheel. The shorter walk will take Haye Rd which leads directly back to the start. 4 stiles, some ups and downs.

The longer walk will continue through the woods and emerge at Southland Farm and pick up South Hill Rd. we past the new homes being built opposite the fire station to Bowling Green. Crossing the road and going up Florence Hill we pick up the track behind the college bringing us out eventually near Tesco on Tavistock Rd and making our way back to the cars. 6.5 miles.

No dogs unless service dogs, (there will probably be animals in the fields) free to members (join for 6 quid) and 3 quid for non members. Bring a drink and packed lunch and wear your walking gear, should be dry all the way underfoot.

Linkinhorne Loop 3 miles

Starting at Linkinhorne. Park by The Church House Inn, maybe explore the St Melors Church 1st! and finish at the pub. Make sure to check opening hours . (now closed)
Exiting the church main gate, turn left and take the road towards Rilla Mill around the bend and at the next junction note the stone stile over the hedge by the gate. Take this and see ahead the gateway straight in-front of you. This field and the next had a crop of maize. Go in a straight line towards the large tree and spot a wooden fence just to the left, taking you down over a stone hedge stile.
Keep on a straight line and you’ll discover a stream in-front of you. Depending on the level of the water, will depend where you cross. BUT cross you must, through the small gate or over the hedge (we climbed over the hedge just to the right of the gate) and went straight on, by the best pathway we could find out of the bog. Head to the gateway just left of the house in the post and rail fence, into the garden, and keep just above the pond.
See the stile in the hedge ahead, taking you into the driveway.
Cross over the driveway, entering a grass field by a small gate and aim for the top right corner, to a stile.
Over this stile into a field that had sunflowers growing, keep the hedge on your left and go straight to the metal gate and road. Turn right. The FP signpost is just about still standing here.
After a short distance you’ll come to a crossroads at BUTTS HALWINNICK .. keep straight on past Clampit Cottage on your left.. then on your right, the FB signpost was just about hanging in there, enter the field via a new metal gate. (the old gate discarded inside on the left) Looking straight ahead see the next metal gate. Once here look behind to see the lovely granite post. Continue straight across this field, sown with grass seed to another metal gate.
The next couple fields are permanent pasture land, keep the hedge on your left, with an old track running alongside. Eventually you’ll see buildings ahead, the track leads you to a metal gate and a lane, taking you by a number of buildings at PENGELLY. Follow this driveway which brings you onto a road, turn right and continue all the way back to Linkinhorne. Turn right just before the red phone box, back to the pub/church. Great views of Sharpe Tor on the way out and Kit Hill on the way back. This walk can be easily extended by joining up with other footpath walks. Enjoy.

Coads Green – Bathpool 5 miler 2 1/2 hours ish.


From Coads Green village hall exit to the right and fork off right. After 1/4 mile see the footpath on the right. Keep the hedge on the right to a gate and onto another gate into a yard by the farmhouse at West Tremollet Farm.

Once on the road, turn left and immediately right past the farm buildings see the footpath crossing the field. Keep the telegraph poles on your left down to a gate. Go straight across this field staying to the right of the barn at 1/2 Acre farm and follow the track, keeping right enter the field on the right. (This field was in corn when we visited so we back tracked to the gate by the barn and followed the wire fence to the corner where a gate lead us back into the same field.) A little way on there’s a stile in the hedge, keep on this line heading towards great views of the tor and cross 5 more fields with sheep and cattle and horses, none took any notice of us. The stile in the fence by the water trough was abit wobbly. Head to the bottom right corner gate onto the road.

Turn right and right again into a narrow lane and down to cross a stream at an old clapper bridge at Heronsford, then up to meet the road. Right takes you to Coads Green so go left to Bathpool village and turn right to the lovely bridge and The Old Mill House.

Back track from the bridge and stay on the road as far as Meneth Chy on your right, and follow a track to a diverted footpath taking you up onto a lane and go left. At the crossroads turn right, unsuitable for vehicles, and stay on this track to a T junction and turn left.

Past South Combe Mill look out for the pond and see a cross on your left by North Combe. At Westcombe, on the corner, take the footpath into the grass field on the left and see a stile in the hedge at about the 2oclock position, by a tree. Keep leftish cutting the corner you ‘ll see a stile into the next field. Straight ahead spot the stile by some pallets taking you out onto the road.

Turn right. At the junction turn left and follow the road back to Coads Green and the start.

The Copper Trail


The Copper Trail is a 60 miles circular walk around Bodmin Moor.
