The SHARE Guide to Saving Energy in the Home

 

SHARE has delivered this handy FREE booklet to all households in South Hill Parish.  It’s full of tips and advice from the Energy Saving Trust to help you save energy AND money.  Use it to reduce your bills AND your carbon footprint.

For example – DID YOU KNOW…?

You can save around £30 a year just by turning your appliances off stand-by mode!  Your TV, your laptop power supply, your phone charger – they don’t use much power but if they’re on 24/7 it adds up to a lot.

Good News!  Investment offer over-subscribed.

Our recent investment offer was very well received by the membership.  The investment is a 2-year fixed term loan to SHARE which will pay 4% interest annually – better than any bank or building society.

About a quarter of members expressed an interest in the offer, and of those more than half decided to invest.  As a result, we were offered more money than we needed, so we scaled back the amount we will borrow from each lender.

The money raised is used to finance our solar PV installation at Church Park, South Hill, which has been in operation for 22 months and is performing even better than our original forecast.

SHARE IN OUR COMMUNITY

SHARE is proud to support St Sampson’s Church in their application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Improvements planned for the church include the addition of toilet and kitchen facilities.  This will be a green community initiative, using renewable, sustainable and locally sourced materials where possible.

We are also supporting the Parish Hall committee with their bid for funding from the Big Lottery Fund which, if successful, will enable the installation of a new kitchen, and battery storage to make better use of power generated by the solar panels on the Hall roof.  SHARE will encourage the use of energy-efficient appliances and an instant hot water boiler to replace the power-hungry tea urn.

Wi-fi disconnection?

With help from the Parish Council, SHARE has been paying for the fibre broadband and wi-fi connection at the Parish Hall in Golberdon, using income from the solar PV panels on the Hall roof (which we share 50:50 with the Parish Hall committee).  BUT…  our BT contract is now coming to an end, BT want to almost double the cost, and the Parish Council have said they can no longer contribute.  What do we do?  Our share of the income from the solar PV is not enough to cover BT’s aggressive price increase, so we are looking at alternatives.  It would be a shame if we had to abandon this valuable asset to the community.

Pub Quiz – this is now being held regularly again at the Church House Inn, Linkinhorne, on the last Thursday of each month, 7.30pm for 8pm start.  The February quiz will be on Thursday 22nd (tomorrow)

SHARE will be planting our free tree whips on Saturday 24th. We’re looking for youngsters and others to help so please get involved, meet at the Golberdon play park at 9:45am. Thank you. The woodland visit to Trematon has now be confirmed for next Monday 26th, car sharing from Green Meadows at 10am. Join us as we visit a young mixed species wood, plus an established wood which has had no management and another which is described as “the most beautiful wood I’ve ever seen” and reaches down to the beach on the north side of the Lynher.  All welcome email share@south-hill.co.uk for numbers or phone Sue 382397.

Parish Hall Wi-Fi (SHARE In Our Community) – there is currently a fault with the broadband connection at the Parish Hall.  It seems to have failed just after midnight on Tuesday 20th Feb.  We are looking into it and hope to get it reinstated as soon as possible.  As far as we know this is the first time this has happened.  Do you use the Hall wi-fi service?  If you have had any issues, please let us know by emailing sue.skelton@south-hill.co.uk.

Ultra fast fibre Broadband to the premises is now available from Cabinet number 4 and covers South Hill, Mornick, Lansugle and Trewassick.  If you make enquiries and find out any more, please email newsdesk@south-hill.co.uk so we can let others know.

Parish Council reminder: All roadside hedge-trimming should be completed by the end of February 2018.

There are a couple Eastern European men with a white Ford Transit van registration number NJO3 RKA in the area stealing what they can. They targeted this area last year and have come back. Keep your eyes peeled and call the police if you see anything suspicious. GOOD NEWS…  we understand that these two unsavoury characters have now been arrested.

Recycle your Christmas Tree event.


Join SHARE on Jan 6th from 7pm at the Parish Hall. Bring your Christmas trees, and cards to recycle, and any drinks and nibbles to share.

Kicks Count inform and support pregnant ladies about their unborn babies movements, and help reduce the stillbirth rate within the UK. By RECYCLING not throwing away these items.

  • Baby food pouches & lids (any brand i.e. Ella’s kitchen) and Ella’s Kitchen snack wrappers
  • Flexible plastic cleaning wipe packets
  • Plastic trigger tops from cleaning spray bottles
  • Plastic tops from washing up liquid bottles
  • Plastic air freshener packaging, cartridges and used air fresheners such as plug in refills (any brand – NO GLASS or aerosols)
  • Plastic biscuit wrappers (sweet, not savoury) including individual wrappers like penguin wrappers. Must be biscuit wrappers, not confectionery
  • Used stamps (leave at least 1cm backing paper around stamp) both UK and Foreign
  • Any brand of coffee plastic jar lid, instant coffee refill pouches, coffee bean/filter coffee bags, one cup coffee sachets. Tassimo pods and foil bags (Tassimo only, no cardboard)
  • We are also collecting plastic Milk Bottle Tops and Ink Cartridges

Recycle collection point at Green Meadows on the South Hill Rd across from Golberdon crossroads or Annies Tea Room on CALLINGTON Fore street.

  • Plus recycle clothes at the bin located by the Fire Station on South Hill Rd.
  • Homeleigh Garden Centre, L’Son has a collection point in the top car park for Plant Pots and trays

U3A speaker report 6th November 2017
Today’s speakers were Steve Marker and Emma Jones from Hansford Bell, Chartered Financial Planners, Tavistock.
Their subject was Financial Life Planning in Retirement
Steve started by speaking about the recent changes in the Regulations for Financial Advisers, ie no commissions, minimum qualification levels raised, and others.
What is Financial Life Planning, it covers 4 main areas. 1: Life Planning Stage
2: Financial Planning Stage 3: Financial Advice Stage 4: Regular Reviews 6mths/annual.
Their advice in the Life Planning Stage was to prepare Goals (bucket list). If it all’s ends what would you regret not doing. Or if you had 5 years to live what would you do. Or if you had 24 hrs to live what would you regret not doing! And to have the conversation with your partner.
The advice in the Financial Planning Stage was to analyse existing finances, wants, needs and goals, the stress test. Do a cash flow chart, income, expenditure, total assets, net worth, money for care and a disaster scenario. The Financial Advice Stage consisted of, how much is enough, Care cost Planning, estate distribution, Inheritance Tax Planning and wills. Also the facts about gifting money, £6000 per couple per year, £5000 for a wedding etc. Regular Review Stage was to keep on top of your finances.
Emma then talked about Equity Release and how you could release funds tied up in your property. It was a very interesting talk, it showed us that Planning is very important in later years.

Power The Night With Sunlight


WE HAVE BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR A GRANT

from M&S Energy

South Hill Parish Hall in Golberdon has set its sights on using sunlight
– at night!

SHARE (South Hill Association for Renewable Energy) community benefit group have applied for an M&S Energy Grant to install a Tesla Power Wall in the Parish Hall at Golberdon.

This will enable the energy generated from the solar panels to be stored for later use and dramatically help with heating and running costs, helping to keep the hall a viable and attractive venue.

Voting is finished now.  Thank you to all who voted for us and pledged money for our wonderful rewards.

We will hear on November 6th whether we have been successful with our bid

SHARE Update

Fundraising

We are pleased to announce that SHARE has been shortlisted for funding from the M&S Energy Community Energy Fund.  This year £300,000 will be awarded to support renewable energy projects and technologies across the UK.  Last year 25 projects received funding, and this year we hope to earn our share.

The project we are proposing is to install a Tesla Powerwall 2 energy store at the Parish Hall to take full advantage of the roof-top solar PV system. At present, this is only of direct use to Hall users during the day, and excess generation is exported to the National Grid.  With batteries, energy could be stored and used during the evenings too.  This is particularly exciting in view of the recent announcement by the government that they plan to support the further development of battery technology for this purpose.

The judges base their decisions partly on the merit of the project, but also on support from the public. The voting and crowdfunding stage will take place in September and October.  Our fund –raiser, Astrid Fischer, has just started working on the next stage of the M&S bid.  A small team is already helping her to expand support for our project.  If you are able to help please step forward.

YFC County Rally at Meaders


The 80th annual Young Farmers Clubs County Rally Organised by Cornwall county chairman Cat Ede, took place on Saturday, July 22nd at Meaders Farm, hosted by the Ede and Gorman families.

The rally brings together all the county clubs for a day of fun activities competing against each other in various competitions from cookery, handicrafts to sports & practical skills.

‘how many people can you cram into the middle of a tractor tyre’, the ‘greasy pole’ competition, and build a lawn mower suitable for a tractor pull.

Cornwall Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (CFYFC) is the largest rural youth organisation in the county. Continue reading →

Callington U3A July Talk


Callington U3A   U3A speaker of the month for July 2017 Walking in Cornwall

Sue Kittow came to speak at our July meeting. Sue lives in Falmouth and writes books on Cornish Walks.  She has always loved walking but now enjoys the company of Mollie Dog her Jack Russell who provides a means of chatting to other people and their dogs.   She is an excellent photographer and showed us lots of her pictures, including a beautiful geographic sand sculpture she came across at Gwithiam – made by an artist with a rake.

Sue used to write up her walks for the magazine Cornwall Today but thought about producing a book. So she re-visited and re-wrote 20 for her first effort, then set about trying to find a publisher.  She found one in Wales and has kept going – both in the walking and writing sense.

She was inspired by a friend to take a more themed approach and has written a book of walks connected to Writers in Cornwall and their favourite places. Following that came the television series of Poldark and Sue realised that someone else would write about the places used in the filming if she didn’t do it first.  So she began, by her own admission, a little late in the day and working through the winter.  The weather took its toll on her photography and she was faced with a bit of a scamper towards the publisher’s deadline trying to get pictures which were not indistinguishably grey and misty.  She said she spent the Easter weekend driving around madly taking duplicate photographs because the sun had come out!  Continue reading →

St Sampson’s Church are contacting architects to draw up plans for our renovations and improvements to the building and we are also looking at many funding options.

SHARE Fun Day


The SHARE in our Community Free Family Fun Day was an amazing success on Bank Holiday Monday. There have never been so many children in Golberdon Park, estimated around 300 people in total, all enjoying the activities laid on by South Hill Parish Renewable Energy community group, S.H.A.R.E.

Events centered on energy and money saving tips, recycling and reducing waste, including Kicks Count charity, clothes alterations by Janet Harding, promoting cycling with E Bike demos and bike slalom course, planting seeds, foraging the hedgerows and an energy science project. Plus The Big Beat Junk Band invited everyone to join in and make lots of noise.

“South Hill Rocks” was launched as rocks were painted and hidden around public spaces for people to find, then upload a photo to South Hill FB and re-hide, encouraging families to be creative and explore the area. Free Energy Saving Light-bulbs were donated by E-On, sunflower starter kits and grocery Bags for Life, donated by Tesco’s, Morrison’s and Waitrose were given away. A massive Thank you to everyone that helped make the day so special, to all that donated items, Tamar Organics, Spar, Launceston Cycles, Compton Park Farm Shop, Callington Fresh Produce, our generous parishioners, the South Hill W.I ladies for teas, the South Hill Horticultural Show for including the Sunflower class on August 19th. The car booters, the Police for providing leaflets on protecting property, Project Solar answering questions and giving energy advice and the families that came from near and far and team S.H.A.R.E for hosting such a great fun day.
