So, at the end of October the Halloween season will be upon us once again. The season often causes confusion for many Christians and churches as they wrestle with something that seems intrinsically “dark”, but that within society has generally come to be seen as just a bit of fun. While many families who might engage with the Halloween celebrations and costumes may not go in for the mischievous “trick or treat” aspects, I’ve known of people (particularly the elderly) who are very fearful of responding to a ring on the doorbell on Halloween – fearful of what they may find and what could happen. It might be a bit over the top to equate trick or treat with the legalese of “threatening with menace”, but the effects on some people in their homes can be quite intimidating.

Singing Workshops off to a Flying Start
After months of preparation and anticipation the first Singing Workshop of World War One songs took place in Callington Town Hall on September 6th.
From our Cornwall Representative – Steph McWilliam
I have only been down to Truro twice in August, once for the commemoration of the start of World War One and once for a meeting of Group Leaders about a governance review. The commemoration was simple but effective and I was impressed by the thought that had gone into planning it.

SHARE takes first steps towards a sustainable future
South Hill Association for Renewable Energy (SHARE) has taken its first big step towards obtaining funding to start our renewables programme.
We’ve registered with energyshare Cornwall to secure funding to assist us with choosing technologies and projects, and ensuring that this public purse is spent wisely. There’s a video that explains why we need the budget and what we want to do, which you can see here…
Neighbourhood Plan – Competition Time!
Show us what you like in our parish
The weather is still great, and we have just a hint of autumn but with the glorious light and colours of late summer. What better time to get out with your camera, sketchbook, or canvas, and capture some of the magic of South Hill. Here is something to encourage you.
We are holding a competition for the best photograph, sketch, or painting in any media, showing what you think is something in our environment most worth preserving for the future. This can be a landscape view, a building, a footpath or byway, or anything which you think shows what is great about our parish, but it must be from within South Hill parish. Entries will be judged by an independent professional artist, and there will be a prize for the winner.
Singing Workshops – do you enjoy a good sing-along?
Then come to Callington Town Hall on Saturday, September 6th, at 10am and join many others in the first of several of Callington’s World War One ‘Singing Workshops’. These are FREE and have been made possible by grants from The Heritage Lottery Fund and FEAST.

A summary of progress so far…
Since its launch in February, our community energy group has done a lot of talking and had a lot of ideas. We have carried out a parish survey which has given us a clear understanding of how our homes are powered and heated. The majority of our homes are stone built, single skinned and detached. Most people have invested in insulation and double glazing. Oil is the most popular heating fuel, with logs being the most common secondary source of heat.
Parish Council Quiz Highways Bosses
Bert Biscoe, the Cornwall Council portfolio holder for highways, and Paul Allen from Cormac, came to the South Hill Parish Council meeting on the 15th July to answer questions from the Parish Council about the appalling state of the roads in our area.
