Callington U3A August Bulletin

U3AlogoAt our August meeting the members contributed enthusiastically to our commemoration of the start of World War in 1914.

Our MC, following a minute’s silence, weaved the presentations together in an engaging way giving us wartime facts and figures within the theme of personal family reflections.

The Hall was decorated with posters lent to us by Callington Community College. Our display boards covered numerous topics including, family history, photographs, the training of pigeons to become messengers and who was writing war propaganda. We had a ‘memory board’ where members could include the names of their relatives.

Our Baking Group researched old recipes and provided some goodies for us to sample which were all authentic and delicious.

Music played a large part in the proceedings. Opening with a poppy_remembrancepoignant song and a gentle offering from the handbell ringers, wrapped around the poem ‘In Flanders Fields.   Singing for Pleasure group entertained us with various war time favourites and supplied song sheets for everyone to sing along at the end.

The Play Readers performed their own sketch inspired by Dunham Massey – a stately home in Cheshire which was converted into a hospital and they illustrated very clearly how ordinary people had risen to the challenges of helping out on the home front.

The Poetry group gave readings from Kipling, Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. One member had written a poem in memory of her father which was very well received.

The Bookworms Group read from a collection of transcripts from the Imperial War Museum Archive including memories from a young English schoolgirl, an English Trooper and an officer with the German Army.

Callington U3A meet at the Town Hall on the first Monday of every month and new members are always made very welcome. Further details from Rosemary Wright 01579 370578.
