SHARE October news update

SHARE AGM was held on September 18th.Members will receive a full report and details will be posted on the web page.  This year has proved another VERY busy and profitable year and has attracted a number of new members, in and around the parish.

If you haven’t signed up yet, email us or phone Astrid 01579 383620 and we’ll drop a membership form to you and answer any questions you may have.

We have enjoyed and been shocked on the recent visits to the:

Materials Recycling Facility at Bodmin: 30 took a coach on this fascinating visit, to see where our kerb side recycling goes and what happens to it. SUEZ monitor the contracts and processing and can confidently say that all materials stay in the UK.

Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre at St. Dennis: as numbers where limited to 10 per visit, we organised 2 visits here to watch our kerb site waste being incinerated and generating enough electricity to power 21,000 homes. There are no operating landfill sites in Cornwall, all our ”black bag” waste is incinerated here. The tons of ash produced is processed on site and are used as aggregate for roads and building.

Langage Farm Anaerobic Digestion Facility operating since 2010, takes food waste from local restaurants and schools and generates power to produce their ice-cream products with surplus electricity powering around 500 homes. After 6 months being digested the resulting “waste” is a rich material used by local farmers to improve their farmland.

We visited a water wheel to see if hydro power generation is viable. We’re still not sure. More visits are being planned, if you have suggestions or contacts let us know.

SHARE Trees: If you have land to plant trees please get in touch, it’s more important now than ever. Planting and managing trees & woodland so they are fit for the future is a big responsibly, SHARE can help. Plant native trees and know where they have been sourced. Insect pests & organisms such as certain bacteria & fungi are a real threat. Take a note of any Ash Die Back, take a photo, record and watch for any changes. The Forestry Commission has information as will our local arborists. SHARE is concerned.

SHARE Firewood for Sale:  Many of our regulars have already stocked up, but if you need top ups a full load is £120 and dumpy bag is £60 ALL local seasoned wood, sized for you. Email SHARE@south-hill.co.uk All profits go towards planting more trees.

Annual Trees Sale. These won’t last long :  TEXT Ali 07305 044049 this week From Endsleigh Milton Abbot:  Pears £25,  all others a tenner:  Apples , Crab Apples . Ornamental Weeping Cotoneaster,  Weeping Cherry,  Robenia x Slavince  “Hillier”

Recycling Project. We have sent Terracycle around 375kg, equating to over £600for Kicks Count charity. Every Friday at 10am we sort the items at Green Meadows, join us, just to see what we do! see the amount of “rubbish” saved from being wasted.

Callington Mayfest Recycling

Something great came out of today’s litter pick. From now on we will be teaming up for Recycling for Charity and passing all of our recyclables over to them. This is a perfect example of how different groups in Callington can work together. Items collected include crisp and snack packets, biscuit, sweets and chocolate wrappers, pet food pouches, contact lenses, used toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes… find your local collection point and support this project.  www.south-hill.co.uk/charity-recycling

SHARE – new investment opportunity

Members may recall that back in May 2016 we offered fixed term Investment Opportunities to members, rather than obtaining commercial loans, at the time the SHARE Church Park Solar PV installation was nearing completion, and again in 2018.

Members were able to directly support SHARE’s aims and the Church Park project, and benefit from a preferential interest rate. At the same time, SHARE was able to obtain funding at lower cost than would have been possible from banks, and the full financial benefits remain within the community. Our 40kW solar installation at Church Park was fully funded by members. Since then, routine interest has been paid, and some loan capital has been repaid. The next substantial repayment of capital is due in June this year.

Therefore we are now able to offer a new opportunity for Members to invest in SHARE by providing new loan funding. The Directors would like this new investment opportunity to be spread as widely available as possible.  Full membership is open to anyone who lives, works or owns property in South Hill, and Associate membership for anyone else interested in our work.

Because SHARE loves recycling…

We organised a visit to the SUEZ Bodmin recycling plant for Valentine’s day.  SUEZ are contracted by Cornwall Council, together with Biffa and SITA, to deal with our recycling and other general waste.

The Bodmin recycling facility sorts the different items which we put in our recycling bags. When you put your steel, aluminium and plastic in one bag, the Bodmin plant has an automatic sorter to separate these, coupled with people just checking that the whole sorting process goes as it should. First, the metal gets separated from the plastic, and consequently the steel and aluminium are separated by their magnetic properties.

SHARE Oct update

David Skelton has stepped down as Chairman but stays as a Director, Geoff Hardman has taken over as Chairman, Graham Beven Finance Director. Astrid Fischer Company Secretary and Sue Skelton Treasurer make up the Directors, with Mary Hardman membership secretary and Ali Humphreys PR making up the Management team that meet every month.

A year ago SHARE launched “Power The Night With Sunlight” led by Ali and Astrid and supported by the hall committee with Nick Easton as chairman, to gain votes for a M&S Energy grant to install a system to store the energy produced by the PV panels put on the hall roof 3 years ago, in short a battery . Thank you to the 1000’s that voted,(and got their friends to vote) BUT despite the huge support, we came second and lost out. BUT this summer, M&S Energy asked if we were still pursuing our project, and could we complete by the end of September 2018. We did and had a scare on the deadline when the installer’s wife went in to early labour!

The battery has been installed and tested and the data produced so far is really interesting and encouraging to see where further savings may be made. Within the budget SHARE are also installing new low energy light fittings throughout the hall.

Looking at other projects, the firewood sales continue to be a success and we’re searching for ways to be more sustainable; encourage coppicing and we’d still love to have a Parish Woodland. Continue reading
