Calling all entertainers…..

Calling all entertainers, choirs, dance groups, bands, orchestras, solo artists, drama groups or comedians.

Have you ever wanted to perform on stage to a large audience? Now is your chance!

Callington Festival Week has just received a massive boost from the Big Lottery Fund. Callington Town Forum has been successful in receiving grant funding in excess of £8000, for a big finish to our Gala Week festivities. The idea is to provide a large marquee and associated service marquees for a performance venue in Callington. The event named “THE KELLIWIK FESTIVAL” will take place from about 1pm on Friday the 11th of July and will finish on the evening of Sunday the 13th.  Entrance to the festival will be free for everyone. There will also be a free bouncy castle! Continue reading

Church Matters June 2014

“Could the last person to leave the church please turn out the lights.”

TheRevAt the time of writing this article I’m sitting in the restaurant of IKEA in Glasgow, just having consumed the obligatory cup of coffee and slice of chocolate almond cake. The quote comes from the front cover of the New Scientist magazine, 3 May. I spotted it on the drive up to Glasgow – my wife Pam and I are visiting our daughter who now lives in the city. The visit also affords a break from parish life – a time to reflect on life in general and the things going on in society. The past months have been fertile ground as far as the press and national debate on religion is concerned – one minute we’re declared a Christian country by David Cameron, the next we’re hailed as a progressive pluralist/secularist nation with no place for the Christian faith in public life. After going missing for almost a fortnight…
Oscar the cat is back at his home at Church House Inn
“He’s not saying where he has been or what he’s been up to!!  He’s had a good feed and masses of fuss & cuddles.

Thank you to everyone for looking for him.”

Open Meeting with Members of Cornwall Council

An appeal from Parish Councillor Ivan Callanan

pothole reflectionsAfter a request in this parish newsletter and an emailed reminder a couple of weeks later we were underwhelmed with only 10 parishioners stating they would like to meet the Chief Executive and other senior managers from Cornwall Council to discuss and get action on potholes, fly tipping, blocked drains, planning decisions, etc.

At risk of provoking personal injury to myself, are there really only 10 people in South Hill Parish who care about what isn’t being done by Cornwall Council here and elsewhere in the county? Perhaps everyone feels they are doing a great job and are providing a faultless service and great value for the council tax paid by us all. Perhaps I should have pitched the idea another way, so here goes…

If we arrange a meeting in the Parish Hall with those that run Cornwall Council at some future date and time (to be determined) would you be interested?

YES or NO?

If YES, what topics are of main concern to you, that you feel we should hear answers on?
Please email your response to meeting@south-hill.co.uk by MONDAY 7TH APRIL . If we get enough interest, we will arrange the meeting. If not then we’ll put our feet up and have a cup of tea, taking great comfort from the fact that all is well in the parish and everyone is doing a great job.

Thank you.

Parish Roads Backalong

A Historical Perspective

UnevenSurfaceIf you think the state of our roads is bad at the moment, spare a thought for those who had to negotiate the lanes of South Hill in the past.  It was not until 1894 that local councils became responsible for maintaining minor roads, such as those which criss cross our parish, and even then local roads were not surfaced with tarmac.  Before the 1890s, only the main ‘turnpike roads’ between towns would have been maintained in a condition which would have enabled wheeled carts or coaches to travel along them. South Hill parish contained no turnpike roads.

Never say there is nothing to do in Callington!

Callington Community Day was held in the Town Hall on Saturday 22nd March. Organised by Callington Town Council and the Mayor and Portreeve, Councillor Winfindale, the event was designed to showcase the local clubs and organisations around the Town.

Over 40 clubs and organisations attended, with lots of information on what they do and how you can join. Just a few of those present are pictured below:
