Open For Business

TheRevSo, Easter is nearly upon us.  As a child and from my youth I can remember always liking Easter – it was somewhat second behind Christmas in terms of “looked forward to” events, but only because Christmas presents surpassed chocolate in excitement value.  On the Eggs front, my favourite has always been Cadbury’s Chocolate Buttons – a simple little number with exquisite taste, unadulterated by fondant fillings and rectangular shapes.  I think a Buttons Egg is for the purists among us.  And then there was the challenge of separating the two halves of the egg without breaking them, followed by the dilemma of what do you eat first – egg half or bag of buttons? Parish Hall Chairman’s Report, Jan 2014

Happy New Year to all from the village hall committee.

The children’s Christmas party was a great success with a visit from Father Christmas and his helper, to receive the children in his grotto – which was another masterpiece from Gary Middleton-Batts, who is now already planning for this years party!!  I would like to thank all the parents and helpers who helped to make the event so enjoyable, and to our secret benefactor who covered the costs for the event. A big thank you to all who helped out.

For this year we are planning to spend funds on an all weather canopy roof to the outside of the hall adjacent to the field. And projects such as solar panels to help reduce the costs of electricity for our customers.

A couple of early dates for your diaries: Parish Hall A.G.M Monday 19th May, Harvest Supper Saturday 27th September, and children’s Christmas party Saturday 13th December – due to the demand of hiring’s for the hall we have had to book early !!

Our next regular meeting will take place on Monday 10th March, open invitation to all in the Parish.

If you wish to contact me regarding any Village Hall or Parish Council issues, please email me njdteaston@btinternet.com.

Chair, Parish Hall Committee

Calstock Footpath Society

The Calstock Footpath Society was formed 30 years ago from a group of local residents and supporters who care for the footpaths and Public Rights of Way around the area. They are an active and lively group and invite you to join them.

Saturday Feb 15th: A New View of Morwellham

Meet at 10:30am. About four miles on tracks and footpaths. Route passes Morwell Barton, Pleasure Rock and Morwell Rock, then takes the new Tamar Trail past the top of the incline railway, the canal portal and the reservoir for the Morwell Power Station before descending to New Quay. Then back along the public footpath to Morwellham to eat our packed lunch in the shelter of the Chapel. Continue up the public footpath to Morwell Rock and back to the cars.

Sunday March 16th: Menheniot Circular Walk

Meet at 11:00 at the Spar shop in Menheniot opposite the church. This walk is under five miles. Starting and finishing in Menheniot, using local lanes, tracks and field footpaths. There are some steady climbs, stiles, and probably some long grass and mud.

For both walks bring packed lunch and wear suitable clothing and footwear. Sorry unsuitable for dogs. Non-members £2 donation.

Community Energy News

South Hill Parish residents with an interest in building a more sustainable community are in the process of forming a local energy group. On Saturday 1st February 2014 there will be a drop-in exhibition from 11am – 2pm at South Hill Parish Hall, with a presentation at 12 noon on community owned renewable energy generation in Cornwall. Energy advisors from Community Energy Plus will be available to answer your energy questions.

Every household in the parish should have received a flyer with an invitation. Community Energy Plus are promoting an external wall insulation offer so some of you will have had a leaflet about that as well.

A few people have said that they won’t be able to come to the event on 1st February but would like to be kept informed. This will be done by email in the first instance, and we will also find a place for it on the South Hill Connection website.
