South Hill WI June/July 2014

WILogoJUNE 2014

Our June Meeting we were treated to a talk with a slide show, from Michael Pettijohn showing us his time abroad, working as a Vet for MAFF. In his spare time, he captured on camera the way the African folk lived and how they’ve got very different ways that they live.

After he gained their confidence, they allowed him to experience their culture and how they lived. He had many slides showing a wedding that was happening in his village, snapping pictures throughout the ceremony and the celebrations afterwards. He had to be very careful and discreet with his capturing of their culture, as he did not want them to lose their confidence in him. Michael  showed us the remainder of his slides, recording his time spent working abroad. After the very imformative talk & slideshow from him, members all thanked.

A short Meeting was held, thanks being received from the CFWI for our contribution, towards the marquee hire at the Royal Cornwall Show (W.I. tent).  It was suggested that we would do Toy Story as our entry for the Launceston Show in July. Arrangements for our ramble later in the month were made.

JULY 2014

Our July Meeting started with a talk by local author Ann Foweraker. She told us that all of us have got a book in us! It might be in the form of a fiction, non-fiction or an autobiography – we all can put pen to paper. Trying what we’ve written on our friends and family is a good indication of how accurate and interesting it is! Ann first wrote her first book whilst at home bringing up her young family, putting pen to paper in her spare time.

She explained to us the process you have to go through enabling you to finally publish your book. Obviously you would think it better to be taken on by one of the “Big Wig” publishers, but most of the price of the Book goes to them, with the Author receiving I minuscule amount. The other option is to publish yourself, using an on-line distributor. Ann’s father is also currently writing a book, containing all their family history for their eyes only, so future members will be able to see their forebears.

Ann certainly made writing a book most appealing and fun, and gave us many ideas and pointers on how we would go about it. She was thanked for her very interesting talk to us, and invited to judge our competitions for the evening.

Competition A: (Funny one Liner)            1st Dawn Veal                     2nd Jill Reynolds

Competition B: (Sweet Peas)                      1st Susan Hicks                   2nd Susan Tunnicliffe.

We held a Short Meeting, with the local W.I. events being held that we could participate. Some members had attended Callington W.I for their group meeting and had a great time. Arrangements for the entry for Launceston Show were finalised. Our walk this Month was to meet at Village Carpark, a suitable walk would be arranged.

Anybody interested in joining us on the first Wednesday evening of each month would be very welcome. We meet at 7.15pm in the Village Hall. Or give Liz a ring on 01579 383202. Come along and meet us, we’re a friendly bunch!
