Since its launch in February, our community energy group has done a lot of talking and had a lot of ideas. We have carried out a parish survey which has given us a clear understanding of how our homes are powered and heated. The majority of our homes are stone built, single skinned and detached. Most people have invested in insulation and double glazing. Oil is the most popular heating fuel, with logs being the most common secondary source of heat.

The Trevigro Domestic Oil Buying Group is a community group operating in South Hill and adjacent parishes. It is a free service run by Kim Howat who can be reached at 384054 (email w.howat1@btinternet.com).
The group is run with the minimum of bureaucracy by e-mail. A member needing oil e-mails Kim with the quantity and date it is needed by. He then seeks orders from other members. Quotes are then sought from up to 6 suppliers for the Group order. The Supplier with the lowest price is given the name and contact telephone number of those wanting the oil.
The supplier will usually then contact each buyer for payment and delivery instructions. Occasionally the supplier asks the buyers to contact them.
The Group’s minimum order is 4000 litres, the individual minimum order is 500 litres. From experience the prices of oil quoted can vary by as much as 4p ex VAT per litre between suppliers
South Hill Parish residents with an interest in building a more sustainable community are in the process of forming a local energy group. On Saturday 1st February 2014 there will be a drop-in exhibition from 11am – 2pm at South Hill Parish Hall, with a presentation at 12 noon on community owned renewable energy generation in Cornwall. Energy advisors from Community Energy Plus will be available to answer your energy questions.
Every household in the parish should have received a flyer with an invitation. Community Energy Plus are promoting an external wall insulation offer so some of you will have had a leaflet about that as well.
A few people have said that they won’t be able to come to the event on 1st February but would like to be kept informed. This will be done by email in the first instance, and we will also find a place for it on the South Hill Connection website.
