Caradon Monthly Walkers meet the 1st Wednesday of the Month.
I went on Sept 2nd to Lopwell Dam, an interesting drive there, over Gunnislake New Bridge,
turn Right at Gullworthy by the school, drive approx. 3 miles and turn Left signposted Buckland Monochorum. Cross Denham bridge and turn Right. At the T Junction turn Right towards Buckland Abbey/Milton Coombe. Pass Buckland Abbey and at the crossroads turn Right to Milton Coombe/Lopwell quite a few twists and turns and pheasants in the road but arrived at the café car park to find about 30 walkers and 3 dogs. We met at 10.30am at the Old Pump House café by the dam and had to wait for the tide to reveal the granite walkway across the River Tavy. A slight miscalculation due to high tides. Once the water had receded it was safe to cross and continue left thru the woodland flanking the river until joining a parish road. Continue up along this road, joining a bridlepath, we met a couple horses, through more woods and eventually to a parish road, taking us finally into the riverside village of Bere Ferrers. We picnicked on the green, others chose to lunch at The Plough Inn pub. Following the break we regrouped and headed back alongside the river on tracks and a parish road until meeting the point leading back through the woods to the dam.
At this point there are a couple of options:
1) 45 minute wildlife walk upstream, details are at the Pump House café.
2) Visit Maristow walled gardens. Open on Wednesdays & Thursdays.
