SHARE – Networking and Generating Dec update

SHARE continues to work towards a more sustainable future for South Hill.  Our solar PV installations are generating well, and beginning to reap the rewards.  As you know, we are a Community Benefit Society (a “Bencom”) which means that our aim is to use profits to benefit the local community.

Since the 40kW rooftop PV array was installed at Church Park in June this year, we have now received our first payment for electricity exported to the National Grid, together with the Feed-in Tariff, and our first payment for the sale of electricity to Mark Pethick. We are happy that we have a good working relationship with Mark, who has been very patient and supportive during the development stage.

“The Role of Community Energy in a Changing Energy System”, presented by RegenSW in Exeter. The event, included presentations by representatives of several organisations . It was encouraging and inspiring to be with like-minded people from groups similar to ourselves in the South West. Tamar Energy Community (Tavistock), TRESOC (Totnes), Teign Energy Communities, Exeter Community Energy, Transition Network and more. We are not alone in our quest for a sustainable future in renewable energy.  It was also interesting and useful to chat with the business representatives present. Continue reading

Breathlessness and keeping your lungs healthy

Hi, my name is Rachel Williams, I am a clinical specialist respiratory physiotherapist and the team lead of the Integrated Community Respiratory Team based in Liskeard Hospital. My team help manage patients with chronic respiratory conditions and provide pulmonary rehabilitation. I live in the Parish; I’m out in all weather walking my 2 dogs!

Everyone feels out of breath at some time. You might get out of breath after heavy physical activity or exertion such as walking briskly up a steep hill or cycling fast. This is the sort of breathlessness you might expect and you can control. Whether it comes out of the blue or is there every day, breathlessness can be very frightening. Sometimes people don’t tell their doctor or nurse about feeling out of breath as they feel responsible and don’t realise there is help available.

If you are breathless doing everyday activities, taking longer to do things or even avoiding doing things because you get out of breath, it’s time to see your doctor. Continue reading

An elderly lady, with new hearing aids, was sitting in her garden overlooking Looe Bay. She could hear a distant voice calling for help. On summoning the lifeboat the crew found a man clinging to an upturned dinghy, another trying to swim to shore. Continue reading

OK – so John Lewis have done it again. This morning, my wife Pam and I caught sight of their 2016 Christmas TV commercial. It first brought a smile and then had us in stitches of laughter. Have you seen it yet? I think it’s absolutely brilliant as a piece of creative art – the storyline, the perfectly caught mannerisms (not sure if that’s the right word) of the boxer dog and other animals, the attention to detail as the background music is cut for 2 seconds when the action is observed from outside the garden, the human reactions to the unfolding story. It is truly a well crafted 2 minute film. And then comes the punchline – “Gifts that everyone will love”. Having spent some of my corporate business life in sales and marketing, the John Lewis advert plays right into my inner zone of admiration and appreciation for something perfectly done. paydisplayNew Tolls at Kerney Bridge? Fishy ?

Some of you may have seen the piece on Spotlight and the interview with Ivan and Carolyn Callanan about the Pay and Display machines dumped in the River Lynher at Kerney Bridge. It was also reported in the local papers. At first it appeared that this was a new initiative by Cornwall Council to charge for parking at this popular spot where people often park to walk and exercise their dogs! Sadly not.

Some reprobate had cut these machines from their bases in Callington and Launceston Car Parks causing thousands of pounds of damage to get the few pounds inside. Kerney Bridge was just a convenient place to dump them. We are lucky to have such a tranquil spot in our parish as the Lynher valley. If you haven’t yet walked along the footpath from Kerney Bridge to Bicton Bridge, there is free parking at Kerney Bridge.

November News Update.

Neighbourhood Plan Update.  The NP Steering group and parish council met with experts from Cornwall Council and agreed the most important thing is that the Parish residents are consulted and agree with the policies being proposed.  Surveys will be distributed by email and printed copies for your input.  Once there is a consensus this Draft Plan can be finally examined and if it passes this test there will be a referendum where you will be able to vote before it is adopted. This is some way off, so we need your help. The PC web site will be updated with all the relevant documentation so you can follow the process.

Callington and Gunnislake Health Centres are upgrading their computer systems and this may cause some disruption to the services provided while this is being undertaken. We thank you for your patience whilst we work towards introducing SystmOne, a better system for the Practice and our patients all round.

SHARE Firewood for Sale £50 a dumpy bag, £100 a trailer load, delivered locally. Money raised will buy trees to plant and create our own community wood. Currently looking for areas to plant trees, so if you would like to be involved and can offer a piece of land, or have wood land that needs managing, you’ll get all the benefits of working with SHARE. It will enable SHARE to apply for grant funding and expertise and offer a much needed developing community project. We look forward to hearing from you share@south-hill.co.uk to discuss a mutually beneficial agreement. Thank You to EVERYONE that has helped to date, by donating wood and your time to collect, split & deliver wood. James has dismantled some awkward trees close to buildings and wires, if you need limbs felling or a quote to remove trees and branches from Your garden contact share@south-hill.co.uk so we can coordinate jobs together.

Callington Community College Alumna We’re looking for former pupils to return to school to motivate the current students, through a programme called FUTURE FIRST.  Sign Up Here.  The first official Future First event saw James Crawford speak for ten minutes to a Year 11 assembly about how he got to where he is now. The students absolutely loved it and James is going to feature on one of our posters. If you have a head shot of yourself and a line or two along the lines of “I went to Callington and now I…” you can be featured on the walls and information screens around college. I am principally a Drama and Theatre teacher and in the middle of directing our Christmas show, a version of ‘Mary Poppins’; on the 5th & 6th of December, former pupils, if you want tickets email me or any info about Future First. Harvest at St Sampson’s, South Hill This year’s Harvest at St Sampson’s was a bit different. In addition to the church being beautifully decorated, full of magnificent flowers & produce and the Golberdon Girls singing, an olive tree was planted during the service. The tree is a symbol of hope and peace planted in the mud of the parish. Everyone in the community was invited to bring a small amount of mud (earth) to the service, or to leave it in a bucket in the porch.  In addition mud was also collected from all the junctions in the lanes and from the areas where people live. With the help of children and adults in the congregation, the tree was planted in a clay pot with an interlocking pattern around the top representing our connectedness. Crocks for drainage were placed at the base representing the certain Christian presence in the community. The mud the tree was planted in, represents all of our actions good and bad, just as soil contains a mixture of ingredients – not all pleasant. The tree with its central stem represents Jesus and the many branches represent all the people in the community, some tender and broken parts needing more care than others.  The tree was then watered, representing blessings pouring through the people, reaching every part of our lives. Our tree now stands proudly at the entrance to St Sampson’s.  A reminder for all that with God’s blessings, out of mud good things can grow. The harvest supper was well attended and with much laughter and fun £240.20 was raised for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and an overflowing box of food collected for the local foodbank. After all the competitive bidding everyone enjoyed a delicious supper and a welcome cup of tea.  Many thanks to all who donated & bought and thanks to those who organised and made the evening so enjoyable.  Judith Ayers.

Church Matters – November 2016

At the recent Honey Fair, Churches Together in Callington (CTiC) stepped out in a new way. Alongside the usual exhibitions and hospitality available in the churches, there was the presence on Fore Street of the CTiC tent and a prayer team. The tent had two banners – a floor standing sail displaying the CTiC logo and another banner attached inside the tent with the word “HEALING” upon it. The tent itself was open on three sides so all could see the Healing banner. A thick blue carpet and two chairs completed the invitation to step inside.

It’s always interesting to see people’s reactions to a Healing banner. Some view it with suspicion. Others catch a glimpse and then avert their eyes or cross over the street. Some stop to find out more. Some then accept the invitation and sit down to receive prayer and whatever God may have for them. Prayer for healing regularly goes on inside our churches and we often see startling results. This was just taking it out onto the streets for the benefit of the community, for those brave enough to receive. Continue reading

Callington U3A at Cotehele

Just Hanging: Rachel Hunt, Properties Manager at Cotehele House, gave a fascinating talk about the  tapestries that hang at Cotehele. They help you step back hundreds of years into a period created by the Edgcombe family in the 18th century when they remodelled Mount Edgcombe and moved their antique furniture and tapestries to Cotehele.   Continue reading

Church Matters October 2016

Science and technology are wondrous things. Sometimes you just have to stand back in awe at some of the things that science uncovers and technology achieves. A case in point is the recent success of the space probe Juno, launched by NASA back in August 2011 and now orbiting around the planet Jupiter. Over the past five years Juno has travelled over 300 million miles and undertaken some pretty intricate manoeuvres in order to reach its goal – all the more mind-boggling when you consider that the manoeuvres are effectively controlled from earth.
