St Sampson’s Church is a beautiful place with a small but thriving congregation. There is a lot of history connected with it including Bishop Trelawny’s first parish and the high possibility of St Sampson founding a monastery here.
A Vision for St Sampson’s Church
Our vision for St Sampson’s Church and its place in the community in the 21st century is to improve facilities at the church for wider community use. We asked as many people as possible for their ideas and comments to help us learn more about what our community needs and how we as a church can help meet those needs. They came up with one hundred uses!
Whether you are a regular member of our church family, an occasional visitor or someone who has never visited the church, yet. You are welcome. St Sampson’s church has been part of the life of South Hill for almost seven hundred years, as a place of Christian worship and as a focus for the community. It is your parish church; it is there for everyone.
But we need to make the building weather proof and fix the roof, the ceiling, the tower, the floor, restore and re- install our bells and most importantly install a toilet and kitchen so that everyone can fully use this amazing place.
We have now fixed the windows, the porch, external walls, restored 2 doors, completed some roof work, installed new efficient heating, removed the bells for safety and have most permissions in place for the rest of the work. More work is scheduled to start soon. We have amazingly raised £300,000 of the £600,000 needed.
We are busy fundraising with our CRUX team (cherished, restored, unlocked church) and applying for grant funding.

Have you always wanted to look round St Sampson’s church but never got round to it? The church is open for visitors.
There is a wealth of faith and history to be discovered in this place where Christians have worshiped for over a thousand years, where baptisms, weddings and funerals have marked significant moments in people’s lives and still continue to do so. People who visit often comment on how special St Sampson’s Church feels.
